Epic Victory: Inspiring story of hope and purpose. A life changing medical diagnosis and a will to live gave Cami Lundeen the desire to share her story and give hope through music.
At the age of 32, Cami Lundeen, hasn’t let much stop her. As a wife, mother of four and singer/songwriter from Vashon, Washington; there is not much that can stand between her and chasing her dreams. Lundeen is pursuing her passion of inspiring others through music. Far beyond her smile and lyrics; she is a woman of strength.
In January of 2010, only one month after giving birth to her fourth child, Lundeen contracted the Swine Flu; which resulted in a major flare up of her autoimmune disease Ulcerative Colitis. While hospitalized, doctors found abnormalities in some of her tests. She was diagnosed with a rare liver disease called Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis. Doctors told her the implications of the disease causes liver failure and the need for a future transplant.
When the news came she said, “I cried a lot. My family cried a lot, but we drew strength from each other.” The experience was life changing. A mother’s worst fear is losing a child, or her children losing their mother – “the latter was the reality I faced,” said Lundeen. She drew strength from her belief in God and praying, “I pray a lot – and that helps me get through. I wouldn’t be doing anything that I’m doing now without him,” she says.
Although the diagnosis was devastating to Lundeen and her family, it brought about the most amazing gift – her music – “ and for that I am thankful!” says Lundeen.
It wasn’t until after the diagnosis, that she began writing songs. The first song she wrote was “Not Be Afraid,” it came from being faced with her own mortality. “I began writing more and more, and found that it was very healing for my soul,” recalls Lundeen.
“I wrote very deep lyrically, and as I wrote more, I began thinking that so many people could relate to these songs,” said Lundeen. She wanted to share this gift with the world, so she decided to begin performing publicly and she got incredible responses from those who listened. It made her realize that this was her purpose and calling.
“I believe that I was given the gift of songwriting at the exact time that I needed it the most. Songwriting was/is a therapy for me – a way to express my fears and move through them,” she continues, “I would not have made it through the beginning stages of diagnosis without it,” says Lundeen.
She still has moments where everything is brought fresh to her mind, she cries and panics, but she has learned to not let her fears control her. “I’ve learned to live life to the fullest because, just like everyone else, I don’t know when my last day will be,” says Lundeen. She says that her music is an excellent reminder for her, “that I’m not in control, and I will choose to live without fear.”
Lundeen finds inspiration for her songs from her life, “feelings as a mother, songs about my children, songs to sing with my children, reflecting back to when I was a child, and reflecting on pain children go through,” she says. As a parent, Lundeen finds joy in teaching her children about music, writing songs for her children and singing them together.
As a child, Lundeen sang in school choirs and church. Her father was a church planter and her mother played the piano and sang at home with the family, “My sister and I would sing with her. Those moments were very special for us,” she says. Her father would join in and sing too and as she recalls, “he can’t carry a tune, but he was never ashamed of that, he would still sing,” says Lundeen. When listing to the radio as a family, her father would always come up with better lyrics to songs. “Must be where I get writing from! Music was around me most of the time. I think that stays with you whether or not you realize it,” she says.
Lundeen want’s her children to be a part of her music. Inspired by her own youth, she inspires her own children, “they sing my songs, and we are always listening to music, as well as learning about it,” she says.
“Music speaks to us in a way that words alone cannot,” says Lundeen. She feels that music helps us connect and she wishes to touch the world on this level. She hopes to touch people, relate to them, gain new relationships, for people to be changed, touched, inspired and to help someone in some way through her music.
“I am absolutely blown away by the outpouring of love and support I have received,” she says. Lundeen just raised over 15-thousand dollars from 178 generous backers; exceeding her goals and reaching the financial support she needs to make her new album. “I should have such wonderful words for you all, but all I have is tears – tons of them! The rest of my family is screaming, and I am sobbing uncontrollably,” says Lundeen. She was in complete awe that so many people would believe in her enough to financially support her efforts to see her music succeed. “I am eternally grateful to all of you who have helped launch my career by making my album possible!” she says.
This victory will allow Lundeen to further her music career. She feels that it’s been difficult to reach people without recordings of her songs. She plans to keep up with regular live performances and work on continue development of her craft.
Lundeen has proven that it is important to “just believe!” When all hope seems to be lost, and amongst the rubble left behind; there is hope gleaming in the distance. There is no denying that any path will be easy, there will be obstacles and tough times along the way. The is only one principle to be aware of and that is, “When the going gets tough…just keep going!”
